Early on, photographers pushed the recorded image in a darkroom or with special lighting to create emotional impact. Painters brushed beyond the confines of realism to create impressionistic and modernism in their work. The abstract expressionism of Pollock and De Kooning were the antithesis of this imaginative wandering.
